 The City of Richardson has is one of the established northern suburbs of Dallas, The city spans the boundary between Dallas and Denton Counties. Richardson made the transition from a small rural town to a thriving Metroplex suburb in the 1960s and 1970s. Richardson students attend classes provided by the Richardson Independent School District (RISD), except for the part of the city in Collin County which is served by the Plano Independent School District (PISD). In 2008, twenty-one RISD schools were named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition's Honor Roll. In addition, both The RISD and PISD have many Blue Ribbon Schools. On a national level, the Blue Ribbon award is considered to be among the highest honors that an American school can achieve.
The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and Richland College offer residents of Richardson and surrounding cities the opportunity to earn a host of undergraduate and graduate level degrees. UTD is located in Richardson, just east of Coit Road and North of Campbell Road. Richland College is located in far north Dallas near the Richardson border. With more than 1400 students enrolled, it is the largest school in the Dallas Community College District System.
